waiting for an IM, later in life a text, soon a myspace message, shortly after a facebook chat, leading up to a twitter mention. all the examples of technologies that brought us closer together and allowed us to communicate without actually saying a word. LOL determines laughter, just as a frowning face shows emotion. but really, what have these methods of communication done to us as people? spending your whole day with someone, barely making small talk, just to receive a text hours later as you walk through the door, saying everything they were too nervous, too shy, to say in person. where has the expression gone? the sound of someones voice on the other end of the receiver seems like ancient history to us now. the hour long conversations about life are now short, two sentence text messages that some would not be able to ever communicate when face to face. we argue with people over the internet, but can’t find the words when they are standing right in front of us. maybe it’s the time we have to really think about the words that we don’t have in person. maybe we just need to get used to the awkward silences, the pauses and nervous laughter because the passion behind the words is fading fast.
